Updated: You have probably seen Himalayan Salt Lamps rising in popularity lately, and wondered why. After all they are fairly unusual looking. But there are some pretty interesting reasons people have been using these in their homes for years. When I was looking for one, I really couldn’t find anything to figure out which one was the best himalayan salt lamp available online, so I decided to try a few and write a post about them.
What Does a Himalayan Salt Lamp Do?
People use Himalayan salt lamps in their homes because they allegedly act as a natural air purifier.
The theory goes as follows: the 15-Watt incandescent light bulb inside the lamp heats up the salt, which then emits negative air ions (NAIs) that then attach themselves to positively charged particles of dust, pollen, smoke and other allergens. These particles, when joined, get heavier and unable to float in the air, so they end up falling to the floor and on surfaces, where you can them remove them with a dust cloth, leaving clean air inside your home.
Normally, these negative ions are created in nature by lightning bolts, sunlight, cosmic rays or moving water.
Many people suggest that using these salt lamps and lowering the particulate count in the air you breathe helps boost blood flow and fight asthma and allergy symptoms. Ionized air could also help you sleep better at night, improving your mood.
There’s also anecdotal evidence that a ionizing salt lamp can help reduce smells in a room, especially for pet owners (if you suffer from allergies, washing your pets often is a good idea).
As a lamp, Himalayan salt lamps do emit a nice soft orange glow which is perfect as a night light, or soft reading lamp for your nightstand.

These Himalayan Salt Lamps are all pretty much the same in terms of functionality, power consumption and glow intensity, so really, any of the ones listed here would be a great choice for using in your home.
The most important factor in your choice should probably be the design. Make sure you get a lamp that has the size and shape that would fit with your decor, so that it won’t clash with the “feel” of the room.
Personally, I do like the 6″ Crystal Decor one, because it’s small enough to fit on my nightstand, allowing me to use it as a reading light just before tucking in.
