As a drive up camping enthusiast, I have much preferred sleeping in the great outdoors when i’m a few steps away from a bathroom with running water. Backyard campouts were always my favorite, and I was obsessed with the idea of owning an RV. Imagine my delight when I came across the insanely cool idea of an VW Bus tent!
If you’ve come across one of these groovy tents and wondered if it’s a good idea for your next backyard party or camping adventure, check out our VW Camper tent review!
What comes with the VW Bus Tent
These VW camper van tents are designed to be quick to set up, so they come with everything needed to assemble your new VW bus tent camper!
The tent comes with free standing poles that have a handy bungee cord inside that make it easy to click and connect them. It’s surprisingly roomy and the added height is something you don’t get from most tents. It is actually designed to be the same size as the original 1965 T1 camper van made by VW!
Since the height is so generous in this tent, you can actually stand up inside, no problems. As an added bonus its got two inner rooms to define the space, and can comfortably sleep four people.
Here are the need to know specs:
The dimensions of the VW Bus Tent are: Tent outer: 13 x 6.2 x 5 feet – Tent inner: 12.7 x 6 x 4.8 feet – Tent room 1: 7 x 6 x 4.8 feet – Tent room 2: 5.7 x 6 x 4.8 feet
It’s got two zip-separated double size room doors that open from center, just like the doors of the original VW vans. Inside the tent has storage pockets to stash things you don’t want to getting lost.
The tent package comes with: tent outer, tent inner, ropes, pegs, poles and of course a set of instructions. It’s weather proofed, and comes with a handy rain shell. I love how they made every detail of this tent to match the original 1965 VW camper van exactly (except of course no engine!)
It comes in a few really cute color options. I was a big fan of the original light blue color, but the peppermint green VW bus tent is also pretty adorable!
Setting up The VW Bus Shaped Tent
So my least favorite part about camping has always been setting up the tent. Maybe due to my short stature, but I don’t think I have ever been able to set one up alone. This tent was no different, I did need a few extra hands to help, since it’s so tall!
The instructions are pretty straight forward, and with extra help you can have the whole thing assembled 20 minutes. The outer shell is a little challenging to secure so it helps if you’ve got a taller friend around to lend a hand.
I recommend always staking your tent to the ground, especially since the height could make it easier to tip over. While we didn’t have any issues, if it were a windy day, it’s always better to use stakes.
If you are going to use sleeping bags inside the tent, you’ll have no issues fitting 4 adult sized bags. If you are someone who loves inflatable air mattresses, a small size would fit inside because of the narrow shape.
I recommend grabbing some extra stakes to tie the door flaps open if it’s particularly hot outside. Since the VW bus tent only has has air vents under the windows, but no zip around window openings. It wasn’t an issue for us camping in the springtime, but if you live somewhere warm, think about that.
The Camper Tent Is Great For:
This VW bus tent is the perfect fit for vintage enthusiasts, who don’t need all the fancy features of professional campers tents. This tent is great for drive up camping, backyard camping, and it’s great for families with kids. The fun VW shape bring such a nostalgic vibe that really elevates your outdoor experience.
While regular campers may not be impressed, it’s a great novelty gift idea. This camper tent would be a fun addition to outdoor movie nights, or a quick weekend camping trip. When coupled with a slip and slide, it also makes for a great snack station for summer birthday parties!
We hope you enjoyed this review of the VW bus tent, and don’t forget to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors!
